Dreamcast Music ripping requrest (if that's ok)
Hello!
For the past few months, I've been searching for the Rush 2049 soundtrack. I've given up on several different occasions and I've also ran into many road blocks. Today, though, I thought I would give it one more shot...and lo and behold, I ran across these forums in a google search for the soundtrack. So I wanna say thanks for making it avaliable for download!
However, there is one other Dreamcast game soundtrack that I've searched and searched for, without any luck. I've also search to see if it was avaliable for purchase, but with no luck. The game is called Red Dog: Superior Firepower...it might be fairly obscure to anyone who didn't own a DC. I've also tried ripping the raw music files from an image of the game, but with no luck (I couldn't find a utility that could playback the .snd filetype). If there any possible way that someone could rip this soundtrack and make it avaliable for download? If so, I would be forever in your debt!!
Thanks!

These are the kinds of posts I love. It really motivates me to continue paying for the site. Thanks.
I know how you feel about Rush. Thats one of the very first games I decided to rip once I got the coder's cable. I didn't wanna settle for the low quality music in the pirated copy.
Unfortunately, my copy of Red Dog will not read in my PC drive, it seems. I'm going to queue it for download if I can find it again, and get back to you on it. Check back here later.

Awesome! Your post make me feel a little bit better...I felt sorta selfish asking :D
Anyways, if I could remember where I downloaded the .iso of Red Dog, I would point you to the link...but unfortunately I seem to have misplaced it. I'll be sure to check back here often though, in case you happen to make some progress
And thanks a ton!! I really do appreciate it!

Red Dog is another one of those games which uses 4-bit ADPCM Compressed audio. I've never found a tool that can decode this format. I just spent another hour searching, and it's hopeless. Red Dog's music is stored in the rather large .STR files. Feel free to load one of them into a HEX editor to see the specs displayed near the begining of the file. From there, do your best to google the information. But I just think there's no hope. This format is pretty common on Dreamcast and the songs always seem to be built by a "Sega Stream Asset Builder" but such a thing does not seem to exist anywhere on the internet.

Ah, .STR...that was the file extension...I forgot what it was called. Yea, I've searched and searched and searched many time over for a tool that could read and playback the .STR file as well, with just about the same luck as you. I guess I can try and search around a little more for something, though I really doubt I can find something.
Thanks for trying though!! If I find something, I'll be sure to post it up.

File extensions mean nothing when it comes to Dreamcast games. I've seen ADPCM labeled as so many different extensions before. ADX also.

Really? I remember seeing a converting utility that could convert some sort of Dreamcast music type to .wav or .mp3 (I can't remember which). .ADX seems like it was that extension...if I could find it, would you be opposed to trying to use it to convert/playback the .STR file?

I'm just saying that no matter what the true underlaying audio format is, the developer would often disguise it as another filetype. Yes ADX music is extremely common on Dreamcast, but I've often seen the ADX files labeled as BINs or other types. They just try to fool you. So basically, the file extension of STR doesn't have much of any connection to the compressed ADPCM format we are dealing with here. I highly doubt your tool will handle this format.
